Living in The Land is part of our religion Print E-mail

The people of Israel entered the land of Cana'an in the 13th century before the Common Era. According to the Bible, the land was promised on numerous occasions by HaShem (God) to the sons of Avraham, Yitzchak and Yaakov, who all lived in the Land until Yaakov (Jacob) and all of his children went to Egypt in search of food during time of severe famine. Consequently they became slaves and were stuck in Egypt for over 400 years.

Getting back to the 13 th century BCE; under the leadership of Yehoshua Bin Nun, the people of Israel crossed the Jordan River and entered the Land of Israel. Note that in Hebrew we call our country "ha'Aretz" which means "The Land". There is a specific emphasis on "The", because for us it is the only land.
The Jewish people are commanded to observe 613 commandments in the Torah. Since many of them (more than half) can only be carried out in the Land of Israel, a Jew living outside of "the Land" can not possibly observe our faith in its fullness! Or in other words: living in Israel under our own government is part of our religion. "The whole of the commandments which I command you this day to observe to do is in order that you may live, propagate, come to and inherit the land which the Lord has sworn to your ancestors." (Deut 8:1)

Yom HaAtzmout or Al Nakba – Miracle or Catastrophe? Print E-mail
Written by David Ha'Ivri

Today as Israelis and Jews world over celebrate for the 59th time the great miracle of the re-establishment of an independent Jewish State in our historic homeland after nearly 2000 years of exile, Arabs and those who call themselves "Palestinians" mark "Al Nakba" – "the catastrophe."

Can't something be done so everyone is happy? Maybe not. The Talmud tells us that Rome and Jerusalem can not both be standing in their glory (Rome representing the empire that took down the Judaic commonwealth in Israel).

The Jerusalem You Do Not Want to Know Print E-mail

Last night at 11 PM Moztie Shabbat on the day before Yom Kippur, thousands of Jews were making their way to the Kotel to take part in the last gathering of slichot before Yom Kippur. As the police in Jerusalem where blocking main roads and re-directing traffic because of the congestion, I too made my way into the center of the Holy city for a very unique tour. Along with 20 of my colleagues, all youth directors in the Jewish towns of the Shomron, we set out for a very different experience, a special sight-seeing tour that should stand as a wake-up call to all of us.

I'm Through With Protesting Print E-mail
Written by David Ha'Ivri

I've given up on protests and demonstrations. There are two basic reasons one protests. One form of protest is to demonstrate publicly that you disassociate yourself from the evil. You set yourself aside in protest to show that you don't identify with it. Another form of protest is an attempt to convince the other side to change its ways. And so, protesting against government policies is a waste of time. Why? Because there is no need for me to show that I disassociate with Ohlmert's policies. That's obvious already. And I know that no form of protest will cause the government to change an iota from continuing on their path. Even if five million Jews donned orange ribbons, they will be oblivious to it.

Danger! Assimilation in Israel Print E-mail
Written by David Ha'Ivri

Assimilation in Israel is not only a demographic threat, but it also leads to a real security risk. Loss of Jewish identity often evolves into a situation where one sympathizes with the enemy, and can reach a point where one finally crosses the line to full-fledged, active support of the war against Israel.

Tali Fahima is a Jewish woman and a resident of Tel Aviv who paid frequent visits to Jenin, where she developed a romantic relationship with Zakaria Zubeidi, who is chief of "the Al-Aksa Brigades" and one of the most wanted terrorists in the Shomron. Not only is she the "mistress" of this Arab terrorist, but she herself was arrested by the Israeli authorities when it became known that she was involved in terrorist activities against Jews in Israel.
